#1: Hello, and welcome to The Seed.

This newsletter is brought to you by 7 Generation Ventures, a Digital, B2B ClimateTech investor that provides the coaching and capital that high ambition, high impact founders need to make the world a better place. We promise this newsletter is not a corporate mouthpiece — our vision is to create a lightning rod of info, insights and intelligence to help you, whether you’re an investor, founder, operator or enthusiast in the early stage Climatetech space, so that you can join us in making the world a better place.

Venture funding in ClimateTech, while impacted by broader market contractions, remains a beacon of resilience amidst escalating concerns over climate change. We believe start ups our our greatest hope in solving the sustainability crises we’re facing and thus we want to make sure we’re giving them every kitchen sink we’ve got to move the needle.

“The Seed,” our newsletter, along with our Podcast of the same name, will bring cutting-edge insights, news, and research to early-stage ClimateTech founders and investors.

Our hope, is that by equipping you with that extra little bit of knowledge, insight and learning we can make the world a little bit better…one seed at a time.

#2: The interlinkage between software and ClimateTech

Don’t take our word for it when it comes to how software interlinks with ClimateTech. The team at ClimatePapa have done a stellar job of setting it out in this article.

Software in climate tech serves various roles: as a product, enabler, designer, deployer, and output. Key areas include accounting tools for emissions tracking, data and action tools for managing diverse data in decarbonization, fintech solutions for distributing financial incentives, and marketplaces for connecting products, services, and stakeholders. These software tools are crucial in advancing climate technology and fostering a sustainable, low-carbon future.

#3: What is the Current State of ClimateTech Funding

In the first half of 2023, climate-related venture funding decreased by 33% compared to the previous year, yet showed resilience and signs of a rebound in Q2. Investment in early-stage startups (Series Seed and Series A) declined, while the mobility subsector saw a significant investment drop, likely due to the maturing electric vehicle market. Conversely, energy storage and battery companies experienced sustained funding, with notable increases in lithium extraction and recycling. Clean energy generation maintained steady funding, particularly in photovoltaics and nuclear energy.

Food & AgTech faced challenges but saw investment in alternative proteins and vertical farming. Industrial Chemicals received attention for decarbonization solutions, including sustainable aviation fuels and carbon capture.

The built environment sector grew, focusing on decarbonizing materials like steel and cement and investing in energy-efficient buildings.
